ABOUT THE IMAGE:
“Now We Hunt Hippopotamus is a convergence of disparate influences, specifically including The Hippopotamus Hunt by Rubens (one of my favorite paintings by one of my favorite painters), Indian firecracker graphics (which I discovered traveling in India in 2005, a trip that completely exploded my color palette), and the David Lynch film Wild At Heart (the title of this piece comes from torrid moment when Isabella Rossellini stares down the barrel of her pistol pointed at the camera shouting ‘Now We Hunt Buffalo!’) I liked the idea of telling a humanity versus nature story in which the human element is represented by miniature severed heads, clearly overwhelmed by the behemoth brute force of the animals raging around the composition.” -Aaron Johnson.

Pictured above: Aaron Johnson signs the edition at his Brooklyn studio.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Aaron Johnson is a painter based in Brooklyn, NY. His reverse-painted acrylic-polymer-peel paintings inhabit the realms between the erotic-catastrophic/ecstatic-psychotic/comic-tragic, fusing diverse painting vocabularies into his own distinctive breed of Americana-grotesque, all rendered obsessively with tender brutality. Roberta Smith in The New York Times describes his works as “visceral, beautiful and flamboyantly timely, which is saying a lot.” Johnson received his MFA from Hunter College, NY in 2005. His work has been exhibited internationally at such venues as Stux Gallery, New York; Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art, NY; Gallery Poulsen, Copenhagen; Gallery Brandstrup, Oslo; The Running Horse Contemporary Art Space, Beirut; and Kunsthalle Exnergrasse (Vienna). Johnson’s exhibitions have been reviewed in many publications including Modern Painters, Art News, Beautiful Decay, Kunst International, The Village Voice, and The New York Times. In 2007 he was awarded a Space Program grant from The Marie Walsh Sharpe Foundation, and is MacDowell Colony Fellow for 2012. His work is in the permanent collections of The Weisman Foundation and The Museum of Modern Art.

Life - detail of screenprint by BLISS
Invisible Obama, BLISS, screen print, (detail).

ABOUT THE PRINT:
“Something magical happened at the Republican National Convention. A new star was born and in near absence has become more powerful than his conservative counterparts. This being represents more than a piece of furniture to be spoken to without chance for rebuttal. Election time is quickly approaching and it is important to remember to cast the right vote. Give Invisible Obama four more years.” -BLISS

*A portion of profits go toward strengthening the Obama Biden campaign.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
BLISS is a small group of artists working together (they call themselves a “horde of art-makers.”) Employing hyper-colored spray paint, stencils and a saucy sense of humor, BLISS adorns canvases and found objects – such as liberated road signs and defunct satellite dishes – with impulsive and absurd alterations. BLISS runs on pure ultra-concentrated joy.

Click Mort – Minotaurette Reading To A Goose

$325 USD SOLD

Recapitated Figures by Click Mort

Minotaurette Reading to a Goose, Click Mort, 6.5 x 5 x 5 inches / 16.51 x 12.7 x 12.7 centimeters.

One-of-a-kind pieces by Click Mort are available exclusively through NOWhere Limited, here:
http://nowherelimited.com/click-mort-recapitated-figure.html

Click Mort’s work centers on indiscreet modifications to vintage porcelain figurines. Each piece is a unique consolidation of two or more previously unrelated figures, bringing together objectively incongruous elements and making them visually and aesthetically congruent. The result is a sort of vaguely disorienting nostalgia, where the viewer is cozily brought back to a time and place that weren’t there to begin with.

Mr. Mort’s formal training consists of a single high school ceramics class, where the tendency of his pieces to explode when fired eventually led to him being banned from the kiln. He has since opted to work only with pre-fired materials. Other iterations of his recapitated figures have been shown at La Luz de Jesus in Los Angeles and Webb Gallery in Waxahachie, Texas.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Aaron Johnson is a painter based in Brooklyn.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Mark Mothersbaugh, well-known as a founding member of the innovative band DEVO, has been creating artwork in many forms for more than 3 decades. His love of visual art began in childhood, just after it was discovered that he was extremely nearsighted and legally blind. His first correctional glasses offered the young Mothersbaugh a new view of the world, fueling a lifelong infatuation with imagery and illustrations.

Mark’s recent visual artwork has been largely inspired by his 30-year habit of creating handmade postcards to send to friends from various stops on DEVO tours. This obsession has evolved into a visual diary that currently yields the artist 1-25 new images per day. These images have served as the basis for the artist’s critically acclaimed solo shows of the ’80s/’90s as well as for his “gallery tours” which have been occurring at art venues throughout the globe since 2003.

With DEVO, Mothersbaugh’s most recognized music project, the artist showcases his artistic abilities to millions of fans. Through their films, videos, costumes, LP covers, stage shows, and printed materials, Mark Mothersbaugh and DEVO forever altered commonly held preconceptions of how a rock band can function in popular culture.
