Here is a sneak preview of some work that will be part of the latest exhibition from Bill McMullen. “Hype, Hustle, Rip-Off” opens this weekend at The Constant Gallery in Los Angeles.
McMullen believes that the objects and ideas of a capitalist structure are not built to last. We are consumers searching for the next disposable trinket or ideal. We are the Ouroboros caught in the endless loop of devouring our own tail.
Cyclic repetition is overwhelming in these new pieces. The helplessness of the situation is recapitulated visually. Endless waves lap the shores of a restricted soft drink landscape. Outmoded electronics fabricated from wood are unable to produce the sound for their own requiem. If you are in the area, swing by the gallery and assess the limit of your pleasure principle.
