Dettmer loves the process of tearing into a good book. He engages in a reductive method that exchanges linear narrative for sculptural form. The spirit of the defaced publication lives on in a censored state.
The woodworking techniques of carving and sanding are utilized on these objects. The process serves as a physical reminder that reflects the origin of the material.
