ABOUT THE PRINT:

Deer in the Headlights: a Romantic American Tragedy in a Pickup Truck. This scene captures lovers in one last kiss before death, the road kill death of a big buck, the shimmering shatter of windshield, the American idyll of the country road snaking a sublime Wild West landscape, and the release of a swarm of spirits into the infinite starry cosmos. I prepped templates for this print by painting on layers of clear mylar, keeping every color isolated for translation into silk screen. This method is akin to my reverse painting process, so the methodology flowed organically from my studio to the Kayrock studio. This 27 color silk screen print is nothing short of a feat of wizardry, masterfully executed by the printmakers at Kayrock out of Greenpoint, Brooklyn. – Aaron Johnson

Aaron Johnson – Ship of Fools

Ship of Fools print by Aaron Johnson
Ship of Fools, Aaron Johnson, archival pigment print, approx. 17 x 20.25 inches,
signed and numbered edition of 10, 2016.

NOWhere Limited is pleased to announce the exclusive release of a new, signed and numbered archival pigment print edition by Aaron Johnson: Ship of Fools

ABOUT THE PRINT:
Originally realized as a painting in acrylic on polymer knit mesh, Ship of Fools is now available as a limited edition print. This high resolution archival pigment print measures approximately 17 x 20.25 inches. The artist’s signed and numbered edition of 10 is printed on acid free paper and is priced at $150 USD per copy, plus shipping. A printer’s proof edition is also available. It is limited to just 2 copies and is priced at $350 USD. (UPDATE: The printer’s proofs are SOLD OUT).

Aaron talks about this piece:
The Ship of Fools is a classical allegory, and a theme that can be found in works by Heironymus Bosch, Dürer, and countless others. The allegory depicts a vessel taken over by force by those who are deranged, frivolous, or oblivious, and seemingly ignorant of their course. This print edition derives from one of my personal favorite paintings I’ve made in the past several years. The Ship of Fools theme resonated with me in relationship to the chaotic, confusing, and tumultuous times in which we are living. The contemporary human condition can seem like we are lost at sea, an overcrowded boat full of drooling fiends and hideous monsters, sailing towards our self-inflected doom. On the same token though, it’s a hell of a ride, full of joy, beauty, and laughter. – Aaron Johnson

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Aaron Johnson is a painter based in Brooklyn, NY. His reverse-painted acrylic-polymer-peel paintings inhabit the realms between the erotic-catastrophic/ecstatic-psychotic/comic-tragic, fusing diverse painting vocabularies into his own distinctive breed of Americana-grotesque, all rendered obsessively with tender brutality. Roberta Smith in The New York Times describes his works as visceral, beautiful and flamboyantly timely, which is saying a lot. Johnson received his MFA from Hunter College, NY in 2005. His work has been exhibited internationally at such venues as Stux Gallery, New York; Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art, NY; Gallery Poulsen, Copenhagen; Gallery Brandstrup, Oslo; The Running Horse Contemporary Art Space, Beirut; and Kunsthalle Exnergrasse (Vienna). Johnson’s exhibitions have been reviewed in many publications including Modern Painters, Art News, Beautiful Decay, Kunst International, The Village Voice, and The New York Times. In 2007 he was awarded a Space Program grant from The Marie Walsh Sharpe Foundation, and is MacDowell Colony Fellow for 2012. His work is in the permanent collections of The Weisman Foundation and The Museum of Modern Art.
