Marie Sester – Access

[youtube=678EaXPekFo,LEFT,4:3]
Marie Sester has put together an excellent project that has a profound and varied impact on the subjects that it targets. Access is a traveling public installation in which movements of pedestrians are tracked with a spotlight. The reactions are quite varied, from terror to joy. Some feel their privacy has been challenged while others react as if they have been granted momentary celebrity status.
The next incarnation of this project will be unveiled on June 28th in West Bromwich, UK. In the meantime you can check the permanent installation of Access at the ZKM Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe, Germany. Online visitors are encouraged to interact during certain hours via the website.
Access has shown us the power and accuracy of the hidden technology employed in the surveillance game. The affordable nature of these systems has led to their proliferation. It’s not just big brother watching. A vast number of businesses and private residences have taken steps to keep their eyes on you. L00k up and smile because you’re usually on.
