Olafur Eliasson creates stunning installations that encompass his audience in a world that is at odds with standard physics. Eliasson plays with our expectations by misinforming our perception. In “Your Strange Certainty Still Kept” (above) drops of falling water are pulsed with light from a strobe that leaves the viewer certain that gravity has been suspended. In “Reversed Waterfall” (below) strong pumps are called on to keep our 1 gee at bay.
Artist is certainly an appropriate description for Eliasson but some may also categorize him as scientist or even magician. Olafur Eliasson’s exhibit, “Take Your Time” is on view at the MOMA and P.S.1 through the end of June and all are encouraged to make the trip.
