A second solo exhibition of photographs from Scarlett Hooft Graafland is underway at the Michael Hoppen Contemporary in London. “You Winter, let’s get divorced”, is the title of the show and it is derived from an old Inuit poem that describes the need for sparks of warmth in the heart of an arctic darkness.
Graafland spent four months living in Igloolik in northern Canada preparing these photographs. Elements of sculpture and performance are brought together creating the tension in the imagery. The efforts come across as bold statements declaring human presence in an inhospitable location.
Some of this work will also be exhibited by the gallery this December as part of Art Miami.
